Changing Gas Prices

To get into work each day I pass under I-95 at a fairly major intersection. Like pretty much all such locations there are a bunch of gas stations there. The standard mode of opperation is for them to change their prices once or twice a week, but they don't do it all at the same time. I've seen up to a 24 delay between the first change and the last. Typically, I just drive till the light comes on the dash telling me that I need to get more gas, but when I see a price change where the stations are going up in price but haven't all gotten there yet I fill up regardless of how much go juice I have left in the tank. Just did this tonight. All the stations on the block were at $2.41/gal. save for one which was still at $2.33/gal. It's nice to feel like I saved at least a little.

2 quarts

A relatively slow way to set money aside. Throw all your loose change in a bottle. For example a 2 quart juice bottle. 20060313_150636a.jpg A friend of mine told me that some banks will take change without requiring you to roll it up first. Sure enough, my bank does this, and there's no percentage charge like the change machines at grocery stores. You also get a decent workout lugging the thing into the bank. Two quarts of metal weighs a fair amount.

Not a big surprise, but you can skip UltraViolet. Or, do some drugs and watch the first fifteen minutes of action (that is pretty good and very colorful), then leave. They tried just a little too hard, and it felt like it was a movie designed by a committie instead of an artist. Two out of four stars. Of course, Milla Jovovich is very nice on the eyes.

According to a wired blurb I was reading today there are 250 IMAX theaters. I've been lucky in that all the towns I've lived in (with the excpetion of my years in Tuscaloosa) have had a theater in close proximity. Unfortunately, the one that I'm close to now is a flat screen instead of the curved ones which are soooo much more immersive. Still, very fun movie going experience.

Idea - wireless leash

Seeing people walk their dogs you often see them struggling against the leash. What about a wireless leash. Would come in two parts. A transmitter that you carry with you and a collar that has a receiver in it that the dog wears. The "leash" would have two thresholds that could be set. If the dog gets far enough away from the owner that they cross the first threshold a beep would sound to let them know to slow down. If they keep going, they get a zap. Would work a lot like the invisible fences that are out. There could also be a recall button that would send a different beep that lets the dog know to come back to the owner. And an emergency zap that could be triggered if necessary. For example, if another person or dog is within the leash threshhold and you need to bring the dog back to you quickly.

More exploding things

I don't think I've posted this one yet, but it follows along the same lines of not putting your beer in the freezer. That makes things explode because they are too cold. Hot cars in Florida can have the opposite temperature extreme with the same outcome. Don't leave unopened cans in the car. 20050812_183138a.jpg This is actually from last year, but I just ran across it. I grabbed a Barq's at the store one day and didn't realize that it was diet till I was well on my way. I figured I'd just toss it in the fridge at work and someone would drink it. Only, I didn't take it out of my car. There was surprisingly little liquid, in the can (or on the floor or the roof). I think a lot of it must have evaporated almost instantly when it exploded. Wish I had had video in the car. It's almost worth trying that, but I'm afraid it would coke the camera before the beverage.

New Camera

This starts with a sad note. A best friend of someone I worked with committed suicide a few weeks back. I never met him, but he was a photographer. My colleague is helping the family go thru the stuff and found this camera which he has given to me. 20060307_223000a.jpg It's one of the ones from pinholephotography.com. I've always thought it would be cool to own one of these. Obviously, not the way I would have wanted to come by one, but I'm honored to have this one. It's going to be a while before I get a chance to shoot with it, but I certainly will. The camera shoots on 4x5 film and the pinhole was formed by marching metal so it should be about as sharp a pinhole as you can get. As long as it's been since I've messed with film, it's probably been double that since I've done anything 4x5. Should be a treat. I'll probably have to have someone else process it since I don't think I have access to 4x5 tanks anymore.

I just discovered that the Wikipedia has a calendar which lists birthedays among other things. I've got the same birthday as Jimmy Page, Dave Matthews, Sergio Garcia, and Richard Nixon among others.
